Next-generation BMW X5 and X6 to be lighter

The first details have appeared about the next-generation BMW X5 SUV and X6 SUV coupe. The new models will primarily focus on weight reduction and improving fuel economy.

Per se, the newcomers will feature new axles that are around 150kg (330lbs) lighter than the outgoing ones, and when combined with other weight-saving steps, the base X5 is looking to tip the scales at 1,814kg (4,000lbs).

Alongside lighter materials, BMW will offer a range of fuel-efficient engines with a twist, including the usual V6 and V8 engines. The twist comes in a form of two new 4-cylinder engines, one petrol and one diesel, with the latter produces 242bhp (245PS/180kW), and a plug-in hybrid system that will feature a 345bhp (350PS/257kW) inline-6 petrol unit that's linked to a 108bhp (110PS/81kW) electric motor.

Believe it or not, the M-variants have
proved popular
Like the current line-up, the hot M variants are anticipated to be 10 – 15% more fuel-efficient while retaining their current 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine, with a power increase to 564bhp (567PS/416kW).

While the outgoing X6 was criticised for its poor rear visibility and lack of rear headroom, the new model will feature a more functional design that will improve rear visibility and increase rear headroom.

Internally, both vehicles will adopt a cabin similar to the 5-Series GT, which will include optional amenities like wood inserts, in-car Internet, nappa leather seats, satellite navigation system, and a panoramic glass sunroof etc.

Look out for the X5 at the 2014 North American International Auto Show, with the X6 bowing six months later.
