Peter Lenz, points leader in the U.S. Grand Prix Racers Union MD250H class, died Sunday during a support race for the U.S. MotoGP at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Lenz, who was 13 years old, was riding the warm up lap when he crashed and was struck by another competitor. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Details on what caused the crash are still sketchy, but it clearly wasn’t a lack of experience. Despite his young age, Lenz was an experienced road racer, with nine national and nine regional championships to his credit. Several riders, including Valentino Rossi, struggled with the MotoGP course layout at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Rossi crashed three times prior to the start of Sunday’s race, once each in the second practice session, qualifying and the warm up.
Our sympathies go out to the family and friends of Peter Lenz, who died doing what he loved, but much too early.
