Audi calls for A2 supermini comeback

According to an internal Audi informant via Autocar, the firm said its A2 supermini is at an advanced stage of development.

With high demand for the A1 supermini and the increasing interest in fuel economy, Audi may be swayed to replace the car, which was axed in 2005. The original A2 was made from an aluminium which gave the car excellent fuel economy, but also increased the price-tag.

“A new A2 is being discussed internally and a number of concepts are being looked at,” an insider said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if it was shown first as a concept. “I’m sure that the new car will be in a similar mould of the old model: futuristic, low volume and using state-of-the-art technology,” the source added. “It will be an unashamedly hi-tech Audi.”

Audi engineers must also undercut the 895kg kerb weight of the first A2, which returned 95mpg via a 1.2TDi engine. A 800kg kerb weight is anticipated for the new model.
