First Saab 9-3 test mules spied on the road

Development for the next generation Saab 9-3 is under way and early chassis test mules with few modifications (extended wheel arches) are currently running on the roads in Southern Europe.

Expected to be offered as a three- and five-door hatchback, the 9-3 will ride on a modified version of the Epsilon I platform. Parts will be sourced from various automakers, particularly BMW.

Back in September an engine purchasing agreement was made with BMW giving Saab access to a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with start/stop technology. As a point of comparisson, the 1.6-liter turbo engine in the MINI Cooper is available in three levels: 175 PS (129 kW / 173 hp), 184 PS (135 kW / 181 hp) and 208 hp (155 kW / 211 PS).

Other reports have also placed BMW's new 2.0-liter turbo as a potential candidate for the 9-3 however detuned to produce 222 hp (166 kW / 225 PS). BMW recently unveiled this engine producing 245 PS (180 kW / 242 bhp) in the X1 model.

The new Saab 9-3 is expected to launch in 2012. Further out, a 9-3 Hybrid will be introduced and an electric vehicle will be launched by 2016.

2009 Saab Turbo X: Not Quite X-traordinary

the awkward years and now
Saab: the awkward years and now

I am not a Saab naysayer. I have always found the slightly quirky cars a nice balance to all of the Luminas and Cavaliers cranked out over the years by the “designers” (and I use that term loosely) from mothership General Motors. I also, admittedly, generally only write about cars I like and I WANT to like the Turbo X. But I don’t; and like most bad things these days it’s because of money.

First the good news:

One of the main reasons Saab has failed to make much of an impression in the U.S. is because of Saabs rather lackluster performance in comparison to other European luxury cars. In that regard the Saab earns higher marks than is usually expected. Instead of the front-wheeled drive we’ve come to expect all Turbo X models come with all-wheel drive and a pretty exceptionally turbocharged 2.8-liter V6 that produces 280 horsepower. Finally Saabs horsepower numbers are at least in the ball park of their sport sedan cohorts. Turbocharging is something Saab has nearly 30 years’ worth of experience doing, so the Turbo X does it and does it well; without any lag of power that has plagued the Turbo’s reputation in the past. Best of all, Saab generates all its torque at low engine speeds: 2,150 r.p.m., which, means the power is immediately available, providing great acceleration the moment you step on the gas pedal. In terms of handling, the AWD is great, perhaps even the best of the cars in its class.

Not lagging far behind the competition
Turbo X: Not lagging far behind the competition

Now the bad news: All of this available power sucks down gas at an abysmal rate.

The Turbo X’s EPA rating of 15 m.p.g. in the city and 24 m.p.g. on the highway is worse than any of its competitors and worse than larger cars like the all-wheel drive Cadillac CTS. In Saab’s defense, I’ve read that it gets marginally better gas mileage on the highway than what the EPA rating states. So maybe I’ll give it a pass on that.

While the exterior and interior styling itself, for that matter, is quite attractive and very much in league with other luxury cars, the execution comes across as cheap. Like much of GM’s products, there is too much hard plastic alongside the upscale leather upholstery and carbon fiber trim. Additionally, fit and finish is an issue with a car trying to be talked about in the same breath as Audi or Lexus; a big no-no. And while it is nice, it isn’t quite nice enough for a car that costs, wait for it…….over $40,000.

That’s bad news #2. The 2009 Turbo X starts at $41,765 for the sedan, $42,565 for the wagon, and is nicely equipped at $44,560. In a competition where your rivals are the Audi A4, BMW 225xi, Lexus IS 250 AWD and Volvo S80, all of them AWD vehicles; the Turbo X is the priciest entry of the bunch.

While the Turbo X performs admirably it really hasn’t earned the right to be the most expensive car in that group.

Swedish Gov Grants Saab $585M Loan

56288405

Late yesterday evening, reports broke that the Swedish government had agreed to guarantee Saab’s request for a $585 million European Investment Bank loan apparently needed to secure Koenigsegg’s tentative bid for acquisition. Today, a spokeswoman for Swedish Industry Minister Maud Olofsson stressed that although the government has tentatively approved the disbursement of funds, the transaction will not be final until it receives official approval from the EIB. Off the record, the deal is regarded as good as done and the Swedish government’s only real hurdle is making sure that fellow Swedish manufacturer Volvo doesn’t feel as though they’re getting the shaft – which barring any new developments is exactly what’s happening.

Regardless of how thin the guise however, the Swedish government is still clinging to diplomatic procedure and says the decision to approve the loan now rests squarely with the EIB who will hopefully make a decision by October 21st. If the transaction is approved, expect an official announcement to follow soon thereafter regarding a similar grant for Volvo.

2011 Saab 9-5 pictures

Trading a 9 5 that was on the financial sector for 13 extended years, the unique 9 5's towering tech headlines combine keyless section with a pushbutton begin, which makes its placement on the deck symbolic, as you cannot impale yourself on a prod bind.

Other current, elevated tech headlines combine trizone atmosphere control, lane takeoff warning, 11 speaker harman/kardon sound with 5. 1 surround sound, rear stimulation with a few eight inch DVD screens, a head up showcase, and a maneuvering support framework that doesn't direct for you. It utilizes radar to identify a lane carport at least one meter (about numerous feet) longer than the auto and shows when the driver has turned the wheel far enough while support in. Sounds tidy, though there was no chance to attempt that at the auto's launch close Saab's hometown of Trollhaetten, Sweden.

Saab 9-X Biohybrid concept 2010

Saab will enter the premium hatch market around 2010, with the production version of this 9-X Biohybrid concept.Unveiled at a sneak preview on the eve of the Geneva Motor Show, the 9-X Biohybrid is a sleek, three-door hatch. It’s a rival for Audi’s A3 Sportback, BMW 1-series – and the Toyota Prius! That’s because GM has thrown all its powertrain tricks at the show car, as the Biohybrid name suggests. There’s a turbocharged 1.4-liter petrol engine in the nose, tuned to run on bioethanol, and supplemented by hybrid electric power. It’s funky, fast, front-wheel drive and heading for production. 'This vehicle provides a glimpse of a future progressive compact car from Saab,' said GM product boss Bob Lutz, as the covers were pulled from the concept. The 9-X draws on the design direction Saab spelled out with the Aero X, its 2006 Geneva show car. The 9-X shares its 21-inch ‘turbine’ alloys pushed out to each corner, a wraparound windshield inspired by Saab’s aviation heritage, and a deep front grille. It's a highly desirable car, with surfacing cleaner than a vicar's sermon, and a macho, wide stance. The big surprise is the unique rear end, which appears to have an unusual reverse rake, and intriguing features such as the frosted light bar and a chunky spoiler that resembles half a Polo mint.

Saab Cars History and Info

in 1944, The Project 92 began, with the goal of creating the first Saab passenger car. Five years later, the Saab 92 began production. The design highlighted the company’s roots in aviation. Notably, the car’s drag coefficient of 0.30 was the lowest of any production car at the time.

In 1955 the SAAB 92 was reworked and became the SAAB 93. The engine was upgraded from two to three cylinders but unusually remained a two stroke. The car received a facelift, including the first Saab with the brand’s trademark trapezoidal grille. A wagon variant, the 95, was added in 1959 and would remain in production for the next twenty years. The decade also saw Saab's first foray into true performance cars with the Saab 94, the first of four Saab Sonetts.
