I’ve driven the 2011 VW Jetta sedan, and I have to say it was a nice car for the money. If you had the chance to buy one, brand new, for $5,995 instead of the usual starting price of $15,995, that would be one hell of a good deal. Just in time for Christmas, a few lucky shoppers will have the opportunity to buy a brand new Jetta for the price of a high mileage used car. The catch, since there always is one, is twofold: first, you have to join the website Gilt, which offers luxury products at insider prices to members. As far as I can tell, there’s no cost to join, but you do need to set up an account in advance. The second catch is quantity: there will only be three 2011 VW Jettas available at this price.
There’s no doubt that the promotion will generate huge site traffic for Gilt, but Volkswagen also stands to benefit from the sale. Per Tim Ellis, VW America’s VP of Marketing, “Partnering with Gilt was a natural fit for Volkswagen as both brands have customers who value style, sophistication, and quality products at an attainable price. By creating a special price of $5,995 for each Jetta on Gilt, Volkswagen has taken our tagline, “Great for the Price of Good’ to a new level that will certainly create excitement and attention.”
The sale starts at noon on December 15, but will only be accessible to Gilt mobile applications (for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Android devices) on the first day. Sales on December 16 and December 17 (also starting at noon) will be open to all Gilt users. There’s no word on what trim level the “Gilt Gold” wrapped Jettas will be, but for a $10,000 discount, I’m not sure that matters. If you aren’t fast (or lucky) enough to buy a Jetta for the $5,995 price, don’t worry: if you add yourself to the wait list, VW will send you an additional incentive for buying a new Volkswagen. Chances are good that it won’t be a $10,000 incentive, but anything is better than nothing, right?
