2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG - Driving Impressions

Nothing personal, but we aren’t going to tell you where we’ve just been. Except that it was a narrow Southern California mountain road, one that only stops twisting when it starts to wind deeper into the forest. The surface was only so so, with scree found on many of the corners. Nevertheless, the new 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG felt remarkably at home.

And this thing isn’t tiny. The big coupe-like sedan weighs just over 4200 lb. Nor it is a Slim Jim, measuring 196.7 in. long and 74.1 in. wide, just about an inch wider than the standard CLS, thanks to a greater track. But as the old saying goes, this new Mercedes drives smaller than its dimensions would suggest.

There are several suspension settings—C Comfort), S (Sport), S+ and M (Manual). We’ve been through them all and settled on manual because, to be honest, it’s simply more fun. While it sometimes felt strangely loose in everyday driving, the 7-speed multi-clutch automatic is all its name would imply as we use the paddles to shift up or down...instantly.

If there was anything wrong with our Alpine-like road it was this: We couldn’t play with the outstanding V-8 as much as we’d have liked.

Why not? So much power. The 5.5-liter V-8 has direct injection and a pair of intercooled turbos to produce 518 bhp at 5500 rpm and 516 lb.-ft. of torque at 1750-5000 rpm. Not enough? There’s a performance edition of the CLS that makes 550 bhp, also at 5500 rpm, and a torrid 590 lb.-ft. between 2000-4500 rpm. Those of you who know your AMGs will note that 518 is not a quantum leap from the supercharged 5.5 or naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8s, but get this: Fuel economy is up by some 32 percent. Not only that, but both the 518- and 550-bhp V-8s get EPA fuel economy of 16 mpg city/21 mpg highway.

We’d already experienced the straight-line acceleration of the car—which was fitted with the Performance Package—touching 60 mph in around 4 seconds and hitting the quarter mile in the low 12s. To add to the fun, there’s launch control. Top speed is limited to 155 mph. Must admit, we didn’t test that.

Outside, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG looks the part, with an aggressive nose, sleek body styling and a cutoff tail with carbon fiber across its upper lip. Inside, the car is just as impressive, save for the confusing COMAND multifunction controller. Happily, you can just drive like hell and ignore it completely.

The new CLS63 comes to the U.S. in June, the AMG version arriving concurrently with the normal CLS. We don’t have the official price, but figure around $100,000 for the 518-bhp version, and an additional $10 grand if you want 550 bhp. Add carbon-ceramic brakes and you’ll kick that total up about $12,500.

Expensive, yes, but CLS63 AMG looks like a good long-term investment...if you stand having that much fun and temptation over the long term.

New 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK - First Look

Set as a 2012 model, the third-generation SLK retains its roots as a sporty compact roadster with its characteristic long nose that incorporates an aluminum hood and front fenders, and a retractable hardtop. The snub nose and center mounted three-pointed-star logo on the front pay homage to its much bigger and much pricier SLS AMG brother, but Mercedes swears the all-LED headlight design is a throwback to the classic convertible roadster, the 190 SL, which was first produced back in 1955. Besides the round projector elements in the headlight housings of the new SLK, we don’t really see the resemblance to the SL. But, despite the tenuous connection, the 2012 SLK with its muscular rear haunches, broad taillights and front fender vents is a progression of design. Not that the outgoing SLK looks bad, it’s just that the new one looks better…in my opinion, at least.

Three Top Variations

Looks might be completely subjective, but improvements by way of innovations are not. Take, for instance, the new Magic Sky Control, presented by Disney (kidding! At least about the Magic Kingdom’s involvement). One of three roof options, the Magic Sky Control allows what Mercedes calls the panorama vario-roof to be adjusted from transparent (allowing light into the cabin) to dark (creating shade and helping keep the cabin cool) at the touch of a button. The other two roof options are the standard version with body-matched paint and the regular panorama vario-roof option with its static dark-tinted glass.

When in top-down configuration, a new Airguide wind-stop system allows the driver to rotate clear plastic pieces attached to the back of the rollbars that reduces that hair-tousling turbulent air—bad for the hipster going for the pretentious, I-just-rolled-out-of-bed look, good for the rest of us.

Two Powerplants

For the SLK’s first year, two models will be available: the SLK250 and SLK350. The former, smaller-engine SLK250 will come equipped with a direct-injected 4-cylinder making 201 bhp. Matched with a standard 6-speed manual transmission, the SLK250 will go from 0–60 mph in a claimed 6.5 seconds, and achieve a top speed of 155 mph and a combined fuel efficiency of 27 mpg. The SLK350 will carry a completely redesigned V-6 engine with direct injection, piezo injectors and multi-spark ignition. Cranking out 302 bhp, the SLK350 is said to go from 0–60 mph in 5.4 sec. with the same 155-mph top speed, achieving 23 mpg combined.

At launch this summer, the 2012 SLK350 will be the first model to hit dealer showrooms. The 2012 SLK250 will be made available later in the model year.

2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG - 2011 Geneva Auto Show Preview

At the North American International Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the new facelifted C-Class, which carries many of the same styling cues and aggressive character lines of the larger E- and S-Class models. As a follow-up, the German luxury automaker will unveil the AMG version of this entry-level sedan at the Geneva Auto Show in early March.

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG sedan retains the same normally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 as the previous models instead of switching over to the new twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-8 used by the larger AMG models including the S, CL and CLS. While the standard AMG package will again make 451 bhp and 443 lb.-ft. of torque, a new AMG Development Package option bumps that output to 481 bhp.

That package includes lightweight AMG forged pistons and connecting rods, a revised crankshaft and engine-control system. The electronically limited top speed is also raised from 155 to 174 mph. Development Package cars are also equipped with high-performance brakes featuring two-piece 14.2-in. rotors clamped by red calipers. Other hardware includes a carbon-fiber trunk lid spoiler, exclusive engine intake runners finished in titanium gray and an AMG sport steering wheel.

2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Interior

All C63 AMG models will be equipped with the 7-speed MCT single-clutch automatic transmission, which features four shift modes and launch control, which Mercedes calls a Race Start Function. The suspension is carried over, including the 3-link independent front struts with a multilink rear. Like all AMG models, track is increased over the standard car to improve handling.

New Driver-Assist Systems

Advanced driver-assist systems used on more senior Mercedes models are also filtering their way down to the C-Class range, and the AMG is no exception. Chief among them is the new attention-assist program that monitors the driver’s steering inputs to establish a performance baseline. If, over time, the inputs vary from the baseline, a warning is sounded to let the driver know that it’s time to take a break. In addition to this, there are systems that monitor lane departure and blind spots, plus there’s an active lighting system that automatically dips the high beams when oncoming traffic is detected. That technology also shapes the light beam to increase illumination on the side of the road and toward the inside of turns. Also offered for the first time is an advanced parking guidance option that helps you determine if the curbside spot is large enough for the car.

The C63 AMG sedan rides on 18-in. twin 5-spoke alloy wheels shod with 235/40R-18 front and 255/35R-18 rear high-performance tires. In addition to a more aggressive look with additional air intakes and side skirts, the AMG is also distinguished by its twin chrome exhaust tips.

Other new exterior design cues include LED tail lamps and a new color, Lunar Blue. Upgrades to the interior features a new Black Ash wood trim, Bluetooth audio streaming, HD radio, a new central controller with a 5.8-in. screen, a 4.5-in. color display for the instruments, and a new steering wheel with auxiliary controls

New Genev2012 Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz just announced that it will unveil an all-new 2012 C-Class Coupe at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show on March 1. If all goes according to plan, the striking 4-seater with folding rear seats and standard panoramic sunroof will arrive in the U.S. this September, as a 2012 model.

Although the chassis has the same 108.7-in. wheelbase of the C-Class Sedan, we like the new Coupe’s compact proportions, which are highlighted by a lower roofline, a steeply raked windshield, a long hood and short rear deck. And along the side, the sloping beltline sweeps up in the C-pillars to help set it apart from the C-Class Sedan. When viewed from the front, however, the new C-Class Coupe looks very much like the C-Class Sedan, with that familiar (and pedestrian-friendly) upright grille. Bumper-mounted side air intakes with daytime running lights help give the C-Class Coupe a low-slung road-hugging appearance. And around back, the new Coupe is set apart by wide-set taillights and a diffuser that adds a sporty and dramatic quality to the car.

2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe Profile

Two Engines

Mercedes says there will be two powerplants available, both direct-injected and both mated to the only gearbox available: a 7-speed TouchShift automatic with paddles on the steering wheel. The turbocharged 1.8-liter 4-cylinder in the C250 puts out 201 bhp at 2200 rpm, as well 229 lb.-ft. of torque from 2200 rpm to 4300. According to Mercedes, this C-Class hits 60 mph in a reasonably quick 7.1 seconds and has a top speed limited to 130 mph. Moreover, it’s expected to get 24 mpg (EPA combined).

The C350 is powered by, you guessed it, Mercedes’ 3.5-liter V-6, which produces 302 bhp at 6500 rpm and 273 lb.-ft. of torque from 3500 rpm to 5250. As with the C250, the C350 is limited to 130 mph but it reaches 60 mph much more quickly, in a claimed 5.9 seconds. As you’d expect, fuel economy suffers a bit, the C350 rated at 22 mpg (EPA combined).

2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe Interior

Inside the car, the instrument panel features three tubular gauge shrouds with a metallic finish, a flat-bottom 3-spoke steering wheel and a large 5.8-in. central display. The metallic finish continues on the trapezoidal air vents and the center stack, where matte and glossy finishes are employed, along with a new controller knob, to give the interior a high-tech, high-quality look. For the record, the C350 Coupe comes with standard aluminum trim, while the C350 has Burl Walnut. Ash Olive Matte Wood trim is also available as an option on both models, as is Mercedes’ COMAND multifunction controller.

Mercedes also says the new C-Class Coupe features the latest telematics, aided by the larger display. Bluetooth audio streaming and a USB interface are now located in the center armrest, and services include Sirius weather information and a special destination search by Google. Buyers of the new C-Class Coupe can download a Google map on their PC and have it sent to the car where it can be displayed on the new 3D map with city views.

2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe

The Suspension Story

As with the C-Class Sedan, the new Coupe will feature MacPherson struts in front and a multilink rear, with damping that’s soft and comfortable on the highway but automatically gets stiffer on curvy roads or whenever an evasive maneuver is needed. Mercedes calls this setup “Agility Control,” and it’s said to noticeably reduce road noise and tire vibration without compromising any handling safety. The tires of both new C-Class Coupes are the same size, a staggered setup featuring 225/45R-17s in front and 245/40R-17s in back.

With further regard to safety, the 2012 C-Class Coupe features nine airbags as standard equipment—this includes front, side and pelvic airbags for the driver and front passenger, plus a kneebag on the driver’s side and headbags. Also standard is Attention Assist drowsiness detection. Not considered standard equipment, but available with the various packages, are Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Blind-Spot Assist, Lane-Keeping Assist, a 10-gig hard drive for music storage, plus a rearview camera, a 7-in. color display and bi-xenon headlamps with active curve illumination.

Special-order options include Obsidian Black paint and an Advanced Agility Package. Guess that latter option will have to do…at least until a C63 AMG Coupe arrives.
Wouldn’t that be nice?

2013 Mercedes S-Class spied in Germany

Caught undergoing testing in southern Germany, the prototype is covered in a blanket of camouflage which hides many of the key styling details. While this is unfortunate, we can get a glimpse of the larger grille and CLS-inspired headlights with LED indicators. Furthermore, the car looks slightly larger than its predecessor and will likely have a design influenced by the F700 conce

As we have previously reported, the new S-Class may be available exclusively with hybrid engines. Nothing is official, but Mercedes believes this will ensure the model is compliant with rising fuel economy and emission standards. Regardless of whether or not the hybrid-only lineup is approved, the next-generation model will be available as a plug-in hybrid. It will likely feature the same powertrain as the S 500 Vision concept which should enable it to average 78 mpg (3.0 L/100km).

2011 Mercedes-Benz B55 Concept

2011 Mercedes Benz B55 Concept Front 580x435 wallpaperSpacious, innovative and safe, the compact models of the Mercedes A and B-Class score with their high practicality, and have found favour with more than 2.5 million customers as a result. An extraordinary one-off example has now been built at the Rastatt plant, and shows the B-Class in a completely new light: a B55 with a V8 engine and rear-wheel drive.

The idea came from the Rastatt plant manager, Peter Wesp. He gave some of his staff the task of creating a very special vehicle on the basis of the B-Class – leaving it to their creativity to decide what and how. Andreas Würz, a foreman in the technical vocational training department, immediately took up the challenge. He took a very close look at this large compact model, enlisted the aid of a tape-measure and came up with an idea that not only surprised and delighted his boss and colleagues, but also the trainees: “Actually it should be possible to fit a V8 into the engine compartment.”

2011 Mercedes Benz B55 Concept Rear 580x435 wallpaperTogether with his fellow-foreman Matthias Rieger from the electrics/electronics installation section, he assembled a team of twelve second-year and third-year trainees specialising in production mechanics and automotive mechatronics.

For the brakes the team also struck gold in the replacement parts catalogue, this time in the C32 AMG listing. Perforated and internally ventilated disc brakes in size 345 x 34 mm were implanted at the front, with perforated and internally ventilated disc brakes in size 300 x 30 mm at the rear. The system was combined with striking 8.5 x 18 AMG sports wheels in a five-spoke design shod with 235/40 ZR 18 Y tyres at the front and 9 x 18 wheels with 255/35 ZR 18 Y tyres at the rear. The maximum steering angle at the front axle was limited to suit. The team had recourse to a typical item from the tuner’s toolbox for the suspension, installing a coil-over suspension by K&W.

2011 Mercedes Benz B55 Concept Side 580x435 wallpaperWhere the interior was concerned, friends from the training workshop in Sindelfingen were able to help, providing Alcantara linings for the A, B and C-pillars as well as a roof liner in the same, luxurious material. The seats in a leather/Alcantara combination were provided by the specialists at Johnson Controls, who are located on-site in Rastatt. The finishing touches were added to the B55 in the paint shop of the Rastatt plant. In trendy white with dark-painted radiator louvres and smoked headlamp lenses, the B-Class cuts an imposing figure but only gives a discreet indication of the powerpack concealed beneath its bonnet.

Mercedes-Benz C Class Images Leaked

2011 Mercedes C Class Coupe

Mercedes-Benz won’t show the new C-Class Coupe in public until the upcoming Geneva Auto Show, but that doesn’t mean they won’t leak images in advance to build excitement. The front end is the same as the newly restyled C-Class sedan, but the similarities end at the A-piller; everything aft of that is new, and it’s the first Mercedes I’ve seen in a long time that I’d call “lustworthy”.

2011 Mercedes C Class Coupe

Photo: AutoBild

Critics have already started to pan the design, since they feel it “borrows heavily” from BMW styling cues. The broadly flared front fenders do resemble those on the M3, and the broad character line running from the front to rear also looks like a Munich staple. The C-Pillar even has a modified “Hofmeister kink”, but I’d stop short of calling it a BMW copy. Even Mazda uses broadly flared fenders in their current design, and I doubt anyone would accuse the CX-7 of ripping off a BMW design. If you’re worried about the Hofmeister kink, take a look at the last generation Acura TSX, which copies it almost exactly.

Engine offerings are expected to mirror the sedan, so the range should include a 302 horsepower V6 as a starting point and should top out at the AMG tuned 5.5 liter V8, which is expected to put out better than 500 horsepower. Look for updates on pricing and availability during March’s Geneva Auto Show.

Mercedes Wakes Up Drivers, Reveals

Redesigned 2009 Mercedes E-Class

Redesigned 2009 Mercedes E-Class

Apparently receiving a thumbs-down on their idea for roadhead simulation devices, Mercedes-Benz has announced plans to introduce new technology designed to keep drivers awake and attentive behind the wheel. After conducting internal research, Mercedes Benz revealed that about 25% of serious traffic accidents are caused by exhausted drivers and that drowsy driving causes more accidents than drunk driving. Aiming to reduce those numbers, in March 2009, the new Mercedes E-Class will offer “Attention Assist”, a driver monitoring system that follows in the footsteps of Volvo’s Driver Alert Control system [which, we would like to note, Volvo has been offering since 2005]. Merc’s technology will take cues from Volvo’s, which currently uses advanced Delphi camera systems and MobilEye image recognition software to monitor minor steering errors followed by larger corrections, lack of response to other vehicles, and changes in eye movement. To do this, Volvo utilizes in-house algorithms that allow the automatic functions like lane departure, collision warning, and automatic braking, to communicate and operate in tandem with input from the MobileEye EyeQ vision processor chip. Like Volvo’s system, Mercedes-Benz’s Attention Assist assess how driver’s are handling the car, but there will be some notable differences. MB rep Norbert Giesen explained, “We decided not to use a camera to monitor the driver’s eyes…It was difficult with people wearing glasses.” The Mercedes system will instead opt to rely more on vehicle behavior to indicate a possibly dozing driver, utilizing information from driving patterns and vehicle sensors. “We analyze all the vehicle’s inputs,” said Geisen, “especially steering movements and ESP activation.” Like Volvo’s system, which is offered as part of a Collision Avoidance package for about $1k, Mercedes-Benz’s Attention Assist will be an optional upgrade available on certain models only.

2010 Mercedes Benz CL63 AMG

The CL63 AMG, the lesser of two powerful large AMG-tuned Mercedes-Benz coupes, sits somewhere between excessive and grandiose on the scale of high-end cars. With 518 horsepower on tap at 6800 rpm, the nearly 4,500 pound two-door Mercedes-Benz is hardly sluggish, despite tipping the scales at about double what a subcompact weights. 465 pound-feet of torque from the 6.2 liter V8 and a 7-speed automatic transmission help ensure that the CL63 has ample power in any situation.

New for 2008, the CL63 upgrades the basic CL-Class, introduced for 2007, with the standard range of AMG tuned sporting cues, including a lowered sport suspension with active body control, a unique look inside and out, 20' wheels (versus 18' wheels otherwise), performance tires and a few additional standard features, like ventilated and massaging front seats.

Mercedes-Benz the Best Car of 2010

Pros:

* Elegant and stylish
* Loaded with every possible luxury amenity
* Spacious and comfortable cabin
* Superior driving experience for highway cruising

Cons:

* Very complex to operate
* Underpowered and heavy

Mercedes-Benz is one of the best known automotive brands in the world and can claim to be the oldest automotive brand that is still active. In the US, owning a Mercedes has long been a mark of success, showing that you have arrived in the world. A few years ago, however, the shine on the distinctive three-prong star has been a bit tarnished by some manufacturing quality issues and a user control interface for the onboard computer that has was panned in the automotive press. Mercedes is known for their strong engineering strengths and historically sound quality, so I expected the cars to bounce back to their former glory. With a chance to review the S400 Hybrid, I looked forward to see how they had recovered from those mishaps as well as see how they had embraced the new environmentally green movement with a hybrid luxury car.

Driving Impressions
I drove a beautiful white 2010 S400 Hybrid, the “green” offering in the exclusive S-class sedans. The S-class series are not the most expensive line of Mercedes cars, but they are the largest sedan they sell and the prices are lofty to match. The S400 is at the bottom of the S-class series and clocks in at about $111,000. What do you get for that? A big car loaded with luxuries. I bring this up now as it relates directly with the driving experience.

The S400 is a big, heavy car, coming in at 4,390 pounds! That’s heavier than my Acura MDX! This baby is built for cruising down the autobahn with style and elegance. I enjoyed taking it on the California highways, which have speed limits but still allow for some high speed motoring. The stability and comfort that the S400 surpasses any of the cars I’ve driven, making long distance driving something to look forward to. I would relish the opportunity to drive from San Francisco to LA and back, just to cruise down the road with this supremely confident coach.

With some disappointment, I have to admit that highway motoring was the peak of the driving experience for the S400. With a fuel efficient V-6 delivering only 295 horses, the very size and solidness that gave it such a nice ride on the freeway weighs it down during city driving. To be sure, the ride is still very nice – comfortable, stable, and elegant. However, it does not have the power to really put you back in your seat as I’d expect out of a luxury sedan. I suspect that to hit the MPG targets, the power was dialed back, leaving a driving experience that is comfortable, but not exciting.

Build
Mercedes seems to have worked out any quality issues they had a few years ago. Everything on my S400 looked flawless. Leather and burled walnut covered the cockpit in a beautiful sea of tans, browns with flecks of black for accent. The doors were suitably heavy and provided a good solid ‘chunk’. I didn’t test the trunk heft, as it had a button for a powered close which I couldn’t resist using time and time again, with flawless results.
